COMMENTARY 2/7/2009

A couple of months ago, I had the honor of interviewing John Brasher founder of www.callwriter.com. (See the interview tab on the blog for the entire recorded interview) John’s website provides real time lists of covered call candidates as well as a Trade Management Calculator that essentially takes the guesswork out of the decision of when and if to close or roll the short call to maximize covered call returns.

John has also authored a book “The Ultimate Covered Call Book”. I am stating here and now that this book is far superior to any other publication that I am aware of on the subject of covered call writing. My opinion is based upon my hobby of being an “Investment Book” book store junkie. I haunt new and used book stores buying anything to do with trading and investing. I have done this for the past eight years and my library contains virtually every book of consequence in the stock market field.

John’s wit and humor comes through loud and clear from the very beginning as he helps dispel the myth of the viability of the “Buy and Hold” strategy in the chapter entitled “Sacred Cows and a Barbecue”. Early chapters include clear and concise information on options basics. Topics such as option pricing, open interest, risk graphs, options chains, order types, and bid/ask spreads.

The heart of the book is found in chapters 4-10. Introduction to Covered Call Writing, Greeks, Technical Analysis, Additional Strategies, Trade Selection, Planning the Trade, and Trade Management and Repair Strategies. John also includes a fascinating chapter on his Super Put Strategy (a non standard application of the Collar Trade) as well as an excellent chapter on LEAPS Covered Calls.

“The Ultimate Covered Call Book” is a cover to cover read and will be an invaluable reference resource for your entire trading career. RobinhoodTrader readers receive a special discount on John’s products. Just click here. Best, Robin
